Events held annually range from Durham Regatta, England's oldest rowing competition, and colourful Galas to Durham's Summer and Christmas Festivals, Folk Events, Agricultural Shows and Steam Rallies.

 

"Durham's cultural life centres around the modern Gala Theatre in the heart of the old city, it offers a varied programme of classic and contemporary theatre.

 

5th to 20th July 2008, Durham will host the Festival of Brass. Home to the Miners Gala for decades with marching Brass Bands parading through the cities cobbled streets - the international festival is based around all things brass including Gypsy Brass, Soul, Reggae, Jazz and 30 traditional brass bands and over 1,000 brass musicians.

 

A number of attractions including Beamish, Killhope, Crook Hall, Raby Castle and the DLI Museum and Art Gallery also offer exciting programmes of special events.
