Lincoln showcases living history around each and every corner. Most of this amazing history is located around the Cathedral Quarter – which was once the Roman centre. Make sure you pay a visit down Steep Hill to discover the site of the old Roman south gate and other hidden treasures along the way.
Lincoln Cathedral dominates the skyline for miles around and is one of the best examples of gothic architecture in Europe. As you approach the city by road or by rail you can view the wonderful building high on the hill on your approach to the city.
Many other historical hidden gems can be discovered in the once Roman city, known as Lindum Colonia. The Norman Castle sits directly opposite the Cathedral within the medieval square and houses a Victorian prison and one of the four surviving copies of the Magna Carta, sealed by King John in 1215.
As you wander around the Cathedral Quarter you can see many examples of interesting architecture. Lincoln’s heritage is now on display in the new museum known as The Collection - a brand new state of the art building in the heart of the Cultural Quarter, showcasing the historical and archaeological past of Lincoln.
Why not travel back in time and pick up a Time Travel Pass from the local Tourist Information Centres to visit all the sites in the city. Discover Lincoln on foot and find all the hidden treasures as you stroll around the city over a weekend break.
